Public Communication PowerPoint and Interpretation
by admin on Jun.04, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
In the past five years, my book on translation services has sold more than 100,000 copies in 12 languages and made a significant impact on people in translation services. However, it is somewhat displeasing to say that it has not had as great of an impact on those specializing in the interpretation trade. One thing that I have learned is that even though thousands of readers have met the book with praise, most will only read the main chapter and completely ignore the rest of the book. Simply put, that theory is stated in the subtitle: The Art of Translating Documents. In fact, why the primary subject matter focuses on document translation there is over 200 pages on additional subject matter. If one bothers to read the other material, then they will gain new skills in delivering live content to audiences. University students and working professionals who are familiar with the book don’t even know about the additional content.
The name of the book, the Art of French Translator associations was chosen so that attention could be placed on quality text over quality diagrams. I think we all know that images alone do not make a speech. As an exercise, I challenge you to name one example of a picture show that moved people to join the Army, construct an empire, run for office or do something else? Witness the powerful speeches that move hearts and minds: State of the Union addresses, inaugurals, nominations, eulogies, sermons, commencements, keynotes, and even locker room pep talks. How often did the presenter need to refer back to a PowerPoint presentation? Consequently, it is our belief that the portion of the production that is verbal is more essential than some beautifully constructed slides. This is one reason that we decided to focus most of the content in the manual on building translation skills while also providing supplemental material on delivery, body language, eye contact, and voice.
I’m not saying that Portuguese Translation professionals will see the collapse of PowerPoint as a medium to convey thoughts. But regardless of what we think, PowerPoint is an unavoidable component of business presentations. When examining the pieces of a presentation, the use of imagery plays a major role. This is because it can be used to clarify complex means and make certain concepts easier to understand. But instead of beating up on people who rely on PowerPoint as a crutch, I just want to stress the importance of using slides correctly. In other words, I just want the readers of my books to use PowerPoint as a tool for support instead of the main vehicle that drives a presentation. This should be the standard operating procedure with every type of presentation, from IPO road shows to private financing, from product launches to industry conferences, from board meetings to sales pitches, and in every sector of business.
Can you now name of some the difficulties that deter German Translator Agencies from being effective? A brief peek back into history will explain. Presentations originated as a form of communication back in the dark ages in the middle of the 20th century, when small peer groups within companies gathered around a flip chart perched on a rickety easel to exchange ideas. In that setting, the flip chart became the center of attention as a large surface that all the participants could see and share; but it also served to document the ideas that could later be copied and distributed to others who did not attend the session.
Houston Participate With Local Translation Companies to Distribute Personal Documentation Cards

Community identification cards must not remind us of a scarlet letter that is used to brand illegal aliens, so they should be available to all residents, though the main beneficiaries will be immigrants and the homeless. Immigrants have even been issued driver’s licenses in some states like Delaware and Texas, but since in most other states immigrants are required to prove their legal residence in the country this has not become a widespread practice. What these ID card programs do is to ruin the U.S. immigration laws by dooming aliens not to leave their communities. This is the opinion of For Clean America – an organization that opposes the idea of granting illegal immigrants legal status – expressed by its spokesperson Graham Strand. Most of the Latinos inhabiting the country, according to some statistics translated and provided by the Dallas Translation Services bureau, do not own the necessary papers proving their legality. Despite this fact, and although they have been increasingly marginalized, those people wish they could have the opportunity to lead a normal life.
According to Detective Ron Benet of the Office of Rural Affairs at the San Antonio Police Department, the ID program, which has been running since March 2008, did not meet with any resistance among city officials. Citizens shall not be asked about their immigration status unless there is a suspicion of a criminal act, city and police officials have been ordered. Although the authorities in San Antonio have given promises to keep in strict confidentiality all the information provided by the immigrants, being very suspicious very few of them have come forward to receive their cads. Even though the Miami Translator organization have translated a lot of informative leaflets, letting the citizens know there is nothing to be afraid of, federal agents have started a series of arrests and as a result twenty immigrants have been sent to detention centers. Logically, the citizens felt threatened and refused to come over and collect their identification cards.
The fact is that the validity of the identification cards are only valid within the city they were issued in. The program has been a success, although some ID cards have been confiscated due to accusations of being fakes, say the organizers, whose efforts to gain support from other municipalities are remarkable. Osvaldo Morientes, 28, who is a part-time worker at the Houston Translation Services firm, and an illegal alien from Costa Rica, said he used his ID card to collect his paychecks at the company where he works and entered the guarded buildings where he is assigned interpretation jobs. A fortnight ago, he accompanied Juan Marin Serra to the local Police Department where he was supposed to assist him in a police interrogation as part of a interpretation assignment by his company. As he was driving, he was pulled over by a police officer for not functioning right headlight. The officer asked to see his driver’s license, his registration and his insurance card. Unfortunately, he failed to provide both as only the ID card was available to him, but fortunately, the police officer only gave him a warning about the rear lights. So, the police officer, though knowing perfectly that it is a punishable offence not to carry a driver’s license. Juan Marin remembers the incident with a smile and is thankful to God about his stroke of good luck.
Hiding Socialist Propaganda in Stories

A Clockwork Orange is what Antony Burgess is best known for. But there are several other novels which have earned him acclaim among readership throughout the world. When it was translated by a Japanese Translator translator, one of his other famous novels, One Hand Clapping was in tune with the ideological thought of the Soviet Union at the time, so the translator was forced to remove the undesired passages and place the emphasis on those that fitted. Kenji Ozaki, who translated the work, had the difficult task to improve Burgess’s ideologically correct work, on which he spend hours of strenuous work.
Written in 1961 in less than a month, One Hand Clapping was published under the pseudonym of Joseph Kell, and immediately Europe recognized it as a masterpiece. The observations of the author of the major changes in the British society are mirrored in the novel after his return from Brunei and Malaya. Upon his return to Britain he found out a gruesome picture - the television had occupied the minds of the young and alienated them even further. His first wife, Lynne enjoyed watching particular programs and they to a large extent inspired him in composing the plot. A material girl and a French Translation Services part-time employee, the narrator of the story, Janet Shirley finds most pleasure in composing long list of the things she either owns or wants her husband to buy. Living a life of luxury and being affluent is her one and only mission in life. One day, Howard - her husband, doubles the prize he has won in a popular TV Quiz Show (1,000 Pounds) on gambling. Nevertheless, this does not bring them instant happiness - on the contrary, they start leading a lifestyle which is marked by thoughts of suicide and consequently a murder, insanity, unfaithfulness and laziness.
One of many interpretations of the novel is that it expresses contempt towards the accumulation of goods and the materialistic lifestyle. The novels shows the world in its attempt to address to the lowest tastes in all spheres of life - be they painting, theatre, literature and music. The translation cuts out the last clause of the talk between a worker and Howard which contains the words communist and fascist. Democracy leads the world to degradation and is not accepted by Howard, who in the Portuguese Translation Services version of the novel is presented as the wiser one.
It is quite obvious that Burgess was an advocate of free will, as the borderline between good and evil is not so tangible in a Clockwork Orange. Democracy is purposefully perverted by Burgess in One Hand Clapping, since the reader is not asked to meditate upon whether he/she should accept the communist methods of imposing opinions. At a certain point, Howard hires Redvers Glass, a young German Translation Services poet, to write an article about the rottenness and decay of contemporary England, which implies that England is deteriorating, due to its being influenced by the United States. The U.S. being the main object of criticism in the novel, such conclusions are natural to reach.
Bound to failure in any Communist country, the book was widely read and very successful in Eastern Europe. However, its entry into the Middle East came much later as it was regarded as a denunciation for money-making, a desecrated culture, the whole capitalist Western life. It became very popular throughout the United Arab Emirates, as it was turned into a musical in Abu Dhabi and adapted for television in Dubai with the help of the Arabic Translation Services.
The Difficulties of Non-Citizens in San Francisco
by admin on May.31, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
Eight years ago, Lucinda Rodriguez, an illegal immigrant, left Mexico and moved to San Jose and since then she has worked very hard to earn a living, but so far she has been unable to prove that she is a legal citizen. Not being able to prove her legal status means she cannot receive treatment at a local hospital, receive a parcel at a mail center or cash a check in a bank, or simply rent a DVD or a CD, unless she has a government issued photo identification. Nevertheless, a note of optimism started to find its way through the clouds surrounding this situation when a coalition of civic groups volunteered to issue her a community identification card that would be approved by San Jose authorities and that would require the translation of some documents which would be done by the San Jose Translation Services. Lucinda, who feels at home in San Jose, has made it clear that without the appropriate identification you are vulnerable to harassment. When the state of Arizona passed a new law according to which any person who does not own the proper immigration documents will be considered an illegal alien, San Jose’s administration decided to take measures toward providing its immigrant citizens with all the necessary immigration documentation so that they have no problems with the authorities.
The local governments in several other cities among which Los Angeles and Indianapolis issue or endorse photo identity cards to their citizens. While some communities have already agreed to start issuing ID cards to their immigrants, the San Diego, which is the latest city to join the group, will start providing its aliens with such cards on June 12. According to Carolina Herrera, a San Diego Translator employee and a representative of The Latino Immigration Defense, the liberal cities and Arizona’s lawmakers are working toward the same thing. For ages activists have called for a nationally mandated identity card but especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks. However, it was only last month that they were put forward and a draft of a complete immigration reform was revealed by a group of senators. In order to prevent illegal immigrants from working, all employees will be compelled to show the possible employers an identity card which contains biometric data.
Those ID cards, though, do not mean that permission to work or legal residency is automatically granted. Its purpose would rather be to grant immigrants permission to places and services where standard identification is required. In San Francisco, the cards can be used to gain access to medical centers and doctors’ offices; seek help from private social service agencies; and use the city’s public facilities like swimming pools for example. Moreover, government officials state that the cards will give illegal aliens who live in fear of deportation more confidence about reporting crimes, while officials will be able to help those immigrants who are victims of crimes. Consequently, the San Francisco Translator have been really busy recently translating various legal documents. One of their employees, Paola Santiago Lorenzo, who is also a Latino liaison activist, believes that people who live in America must be safe and healthy an identity card program for illegal immigrants will bring this stability. Sending and receiving money, opening a bank account or simply cashing a check are only some of the services that the card will make available to immigrants. In this way immigrants will be enabled to deposit their pay checks, so that they do not carry large sums of cash, which will attractive to thieves.

by admin on May.30, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
You might believe that most of the leg work is done once you’ve found your after dinner speaker.Sadly this is not necessarily the case. Once you’ve arranged who’ll be speaking it is time to do your homework and ensure that the after dinner speaker is briefed and fully prepared.
Too many people seem to believe that their professional after dinner speaker will automatically ensure they get the perfect speech. If you are looking to save yourself the tedium of listening to a boring presentation that has been made in every venue before then you have to brief your speaker on a few simple details to allow him or her to tailor their speech.
The simplest rule which is nevertheless often overlooked is to ensure that the speaker is given adequate information on the audience. At the very least he or she must know their gender, age range and motivation for even being in a room together. Do they all work for you? Are they all members of the same club or association? All of this is important and affects the speech. The after dinner speaker should also be very aware of what is expected of him or her. Whether they are expected motivation, humour, advice or something else entirely will affect the speech.
Hopefully you’ve chosen your speaker well and have seen examples of their talents before hiring them. Therefore you should feel sure that they will not be employing boring often-repeated clich
Why Hire Keynote Speakers?
by admin on May.29, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
An after dinner speaker and their role at charity, sports and educational events is a concept with which most people are familiar; keynote speakers are less known.Actually, it is quite likely that many people reading this article have listened to keynote speakers before in the past without even realising it. Because the idea of keynote speakers is not so ordinary and commonplace as an after dinner speaker, we may simply not have realised.
Keynote speakers deliver their speeches at grand, important and large events. Such events could be political, educational, commercial or industrial. The purpose of the speech is to set out the general tone of the event as a whole. Therefore, keynote speakers will most likely set out the main points or messages of the event in a summary.
Keynote speakers may perform either at the beginning or end of the event, depending on whether or not they are introducing the event or summing it up. If they are introducing the event then their job is to plant a seed of interest in the audience so that they are geared up in advance of the event. On the other hand, when speaking at the end of the event they will aim to sum up coherently so that the audience is sure to take away the right message.
Because they have generally been trained in or had a lot of practice at public speaking, keynote speakers know who to make striking and memorable speeches. They are also likely to be renowned, respected, and perhaps even famous within their field. They are never hired only for speaking ability, but for the authority and the expertise with which they can comment on a subject area. Therefore many of the most popular keynote speakers are highly educated, entrepreneurial and successful.
Keynote speakers are sometimes hired to reward attendees. For example at graduation ceremonies, a celebrity or academic might be hired to make the speech. Equally, a keynote speaker might be booked to encourage attendance at the event.
Some Easy Steps To Follow If You Might Want To Author And Publish A Digital Book
by admin on May.28, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
I’ve been making a decent living through online ventures for the last five years or so and I’m fully persuaded that with my help and guidance others will be in a position to do the same. I’m sure that people would pay good money to learn my techniques, so that’s the reason why I’m contemplating writing an e-book to sell on my internet sites. The one problem is I haven’t ever done this sort of thing before, and do not truly know where to begin.
Quite a few sites have suggest the 7 Day eBook course as a good starting point. However, I also obtained some ideas from talking to various eBook creators.
From chatting to other online entrepreneurs, there are a few things that I want to take into consideration before writing an e-book. For instance it’s important that I guard my electronic book from pirating or illegal reproduction. I’ll do this by buying a protection program, issuing passwords to open the book only after payment is received, or by utilizing Digital Rights Management. These steps will ensure that the e-book can’t be copied or traded extremely easily.
I also learned that there is a definite formula to writing an e-book, and that once I get the basic feel for how to do it, the entire creation process will turn into a lot less complicated. Savvy marketers have proven that there’s an ideal length for ebooks, that the margins should be a certain width, and that there should be lots of white space on each page so that the reader doesn’t get intimidated at the possibility of taking in too much information. There are even pricing axioms out there to help me decide how much to sell my finished product for! I never could have figured these things out for myself, so I feel like I’m making good progress already.
At this point, I believe it would probably be best for me to get some special software that will allow me to take a step bystep approach to writing an ebook. I’ve seen several of these kinds of programs publicized online, and have even checked out some of their features. It seems thecosts are rather good for what the software delivers, so I should doubtless place my order shortly. , the earlier I finish my book, the earlier I’m able to begin to make money from it!
I am excited about the possibility of writing an e-book, but i definitely require more info before I can begin in earnest. I’m going to give the following couple of days to analysis, and will perhaps be in a better position to guage where I stand after that.
Is a Motivational Speaker a Matter of Life or Death?
by admin on May.26, 2010, under Writing and Speaking
A motivational speaker is obviously not a life or death necessity, so perhaps the question shouldn’t be do you need one, but could a motivational speaker help you in some way.Nobody needs a motivational speaker, but almost everyone could benefit from one in some respect. Everybody, regardless of age, occupation or personality will have a time when they aren’t trying their hardest or achieving everything they can be. In times like this, a motivational speaker can help.
Many of the best motivational speakers work solely as speakers and tour venues on invites from various organisations. Usually there is a fee. Despite the outlay of paying for the motivational speaker, they do produce results, tangible and otherwise and are usually considered to be worth the investment.
Many schools hire a motivational speaker to drive home certain messages to students. It is often the case that the speakers have idiosyncrasies and humorous or interesting presentations.Oftentimes the motivational speaker is in the school to challenge young people’s perceptions about themselves and others and a major part of their presentation involves working to improve relationships and reduce prejudice.
Other times, the motivational speaker helps to raise achievement in an educational context. In these situations the prevailing message of the speech is that each individual has to take control over their own future.
In large companies, managers occasionally hire a motivational speaker. This is not a regular occurrence but is common at large training seminars or annual meetings. In times of low morale and reduced productivity a motivational speaker can be of help. He or she will try to instil a shared goal and vision in staff. Staff are more motivated when they share an aim which they believe is attainable. In turn this almost always leads to better results and happier staff.
